Cost of Saving
Two bottom lines

On-site, hybrid or work from home?

Where the work happens changes two bottom lines at once: the business's, and each person's. Put in your team and see both.

Weighing a cut or a gain instead? Use the win or lose calculator.

Example: a team of 40 working hybrid today, weighing five days on-site against going fully remote. The figures are illustrative, and the leavers and output figures are guesses. Type over any of them with your own.

The business

Yearly cost of the things that differ: desks, home working support, replacing people who leave, and any change in output. Pay is the same under all three, so it is left out.

Each employee

What each person pays out of their own pocket in a year, and the hours they spend travelling. None of it appears in the business's accounts.

    What this cannot tell you

    • How an arrangement changes output. That differs from team to team and is argued over. The page takes your figure and shows how far it can be wrong before the answer changes.
    • How many people an arrangement will drive away or draw in. That is your estimate too.
    • Work that can only be done in one place, and what the law or a contract requires.
    • What is not money: how well people work together, how new people learn, and what each person's home allows.

The formulas are A1 on the formulas page. It assumes a five-day week and 48 working weeks a year.
